Both Trump and his billionaire allies love tariffs. Why? Because it allows the Republicans to do something they've wanted to do since Steve Forbes ran for president--institute a de facto flat tax. Tariffs, as Trump says, "will make us rich." True enough if we are talking about the government! The plan is to cut the graduated income tax in favor of a consumption tax
A consumption tax is a tax only on what you spend, and it hits lower-income people like an A bomb. More than half of America lives paycheck to paycheck, meaning every dime they earn is spent on survival. Thus, the higher your income, the lower your tax. A 1% percenter bringing home 5 million a year and investing half of it will only pay taxes on the other half.
So, cut Federal graduated income taxes, increase tariffs, shift the bill to the working and middle classes, and bully our allies while you are at it—the serf-ication of America. Don't bother tying them to the land; issue them a credit card and let them pay the minimum.
